    Handheld Lightning {PG-13; Open!}

Post  Tanya Merrit on Tue Dec 07, 2010 9:51 am

It was a calm day, fluffy white clouds floating lazily across the sky as students of Greenwood Academy enjoyed sitting outside of the cafe, where a few tables were seated outside, white and green umbrellas propped over them to shade the patrons. It was a cute little set-up, and a good place to watch people walking by, especially on such a nice day as this one.

Tanya was seated by herself at one of these outdoor tables, a glass of water and a grilled cheese in front of her. Nothing like the classics to keep her filled and moving. She had her Algebra homework in front of her, and was working through it quickly. She was already done with the rest of her work, and even though she could get through a problem a minute, she was actually trying to go slowly. She didn't want to be finished with her work, because then... she would be done. She wouldn't have a thing to do, and Tanya had things on her mind that she didn't want to think about. Like her brother, Simon - where was he? How was he doing? He would be in middle school, maybe going to the English class she always had to help him with when she was at home. But her mother had sent her away - she was dangerous. She couldn't be an influence on Simon, the "good" Merrit child.

Not like Tany, the problem child. The one who got into fights. The one who had no patience. The one who could create lightning storms.

Tanya snorted angrily as she scratched out her answer, which was wrong, now that she looked at it. It took her no more than thirty seconds to rewrite the answer, but she stopped, tapping her pencil against the table, thinking. She bit her lip, then put down the pencil and took a bite out of the grilled cheese. She gazed at her glass of water and narrowed her eyes, focusing. A small spark appeared in the water. She smiled as she swallowed her mouthful of melted cheese and toasted bread, encouraging the little spark. It grew into a tiny bolt, blue-white branches coming out of it. Water was a good conductor. She smiled wider as she propped up her head on her hands, and then the water exploded out of the glass in a small geyser, the electricity intensifying in power. The glass remained intact, although now Tany's stuff was wet. She waved over to the waiter, who rolled his eyes and refilled her glass for the fourth time today. "This is the last time I'm filling it." He stated adamantly. Tany smiled knowingly.

"Yeah, you said that last time, Todd." She chuckled as he returned the smile as though to say, Well, you know, and then walked away, off to serve a couple of giggling girls that had just walked into the cafe. Tany looked out at the mini-avenue, watching the people pass by. They didn't have anything to worry about. She leaned her head on one hand, letting her crazy red hair fall over her arm as she absently watched them. She didn't hear anyone approaching her table.

Sharleens day had not been really funny. She did not knew exactly why, but the classes had been boring. Ok, English was not one of her favorite classes, she always thought they were boring. But control you power should have been wonderful. Especially because today she had the chance to show one of those fire controllers that dragon fire is in some cases much better than normal fire. It had been funny, but this happiness was now gone. She did not felt like anything would make her pleased right now.

But Sharleen was on her way to the cafe right now. She needed something to eat, because it was not that easy to be a dragon and live on the meals of a normal human. So she was hungry most of the time. But right now it was really bad. So she got herself something to eat and to drink, and then looked around in the cafe. She knew many of the students from sight. But she only wanted to eat without being disturbed. Soon she had found a table that might be one she could like. There was only one girl sitting there, and Sharleen thought she knew her, was from this distance not sure. She also did not liked to use her dragon eyes right now, even though they were much better than her normal eyes.

So she just slowly went towards the table. Sharleen only looked on her food, being careful where she was walking. She was a little bit tired, so it could happen that she lost something on her plate. Finally, she had reached the table. Then she was standing there, looking at the other girl. As she looked at her closely, Sharleen nearly began to laugh. It was clear that she knew this girl, they were in the same dorm. It was Tanya. "Hi. Do you mind if I sit down here?", Sharleen asked friendly.

Tanya was pleased in her own little world. It was fine there, content and peaceful, with the occasional thunderstorm to keep her happy. She didn't pay any attention to the other students in the cafe, enjoying their lunchtime as they chattered, laughed and horsed around, although in general most of the students at Greenwood Academy were fairly well-behaved for the most part, at least compared to a lot of schools. But then, that was only what most of the people visiting Greenwood saw.

Any of the "bad stuff" was kept hidden, behind closed doors, behind the buildings, away from the public eye, where their powers weren't restricted or monitored. It was easier there. Tany had been there a few times, but she'd been doing a good job of keeping herself out of trouble for the last month, at least. (Not that it said much, since she had only been there for three months, but it was a start, if anything.)

Tany suddenly heard the voice and looked up. It was the cat-eyed girl - her roommate, Sharleen. Tanya didn't want her to be there. Not that she disliked her, but she was happy in her own thoughts, creating her own tiny lightning storms in her water or in her hand. Tanya forced a smile as she approached, trying to actually be friendly for once. "Nah, there aren't any open seats here, obviously." She chuckled as she waved around her table, where the other three chairs were perfectly open. "I'm kidding, go ahead, take a seat. How were your classes today?" She asked courteously, not really caring. But this girl was her first real roommate, and she didn't know a thing about her, not even her reason for being at Greenwood. What could she do? That was the only thing that kept Tany vaguely interested in their conversation, for now.

Sharleen smiled at Tanya and sat down. Then the other girl asked her how her classes had been. "Do not ask. They had been really boring. How had been your day?", she asked her roommate. Sharleen was not feeling like talking that much herself. Instead, she took a little bit of her food and started to eat. No, please not. It is cold., she said to herself in thoughts and shook her head. She breathed in and then shot a small flame out of her mouth.

After she had done so, she looked at her food again. Or better, that what was left of it. "Not again.", the dragon whispered and held her head in her hands. She could not really understand why she did not managed it that often to have a colder flame. She knew she could do it, because she had done it before. This flame had not even been as hot as it could have been. Otherwise a part of the table would have bee gone. Sharleen looked at the plate closer. The meat was only a little bit black, but you could eat it and it was the only thing that had not dissolved. Ok, lets hope this will be enough for today., she thought while she at the meat.

Somehow she felt like she needed to eat it like a normal dragon, in one piece. But she was not a normal dragon and she could not eat the piece at once when humans were watching. So she was much slower with eating. But at the end she was still hungry. Next time I ask for a bigger share., Sharleen said to herself.

That day had been an interesting day for Kalyca and all she wanted to do was get something to eat then go to bed. It was dinner time and she had already finished all of her homework and had gone for a swim. Swimming had always given her more energy in the past, but not today, it just made her more tired. She sighed and headed to the cafe.

When she got there she saw the one person in the entire school that she truly couldn't stand. Most people she didn't like she could stand them for short periods of time. But she could still stand them. But with her, Kalyca couldn't stand one minute in her presence. Kalyca was about to turn around and leave when she saw a girl she had never seen before. Which of course was strange because she knew almost immediately when someone new came. But this time, she hadn't heard anything about a girl.

Kalyca decided to introduce herself and find out if the girl was worth her time or not. She let a deep breath out and walked over to Tanya and the new girl. As she was walking over she noticed something really strange. Yes, granted strange stuff happened here all the time, but she had never seen anyone blow fire on something before. She stopped for a second to try to figure out a reasonable explanation, but here at Greenwood, there wasn't always a reasonable explanation for everything. "Hey, I'm Kalyca Starling. You must be new here. I'm the official welcoming committee, so welcome to Greenwood Academy!"

Tanya smirked knowingly as Sharleen groaned about her classes that afternoon. She knew how that felt, although she did enjoy learning the new material offered by the teachers in any of her various subjects. It wasn't the actual classes that made her dislike school, but the people inside of them were terrible. They were all foolish, and they all just said and did the stupidest things. Why did the students, even at the higher level of courses, talk about such dumb things like their relationships? Who cared who was dating who, or who wasn’t friends anymore for whatever reason? Tanya didn’t, that was for certain. She didn’t feel the need to go talking to anyone about her problems. Besides, she had one advantage over normal people (although most of the students at Greenwood typically weren’t very normal anyway) – she could create lightning storms whenever she became angry or needed to vent. Much simpler than trying to explain her problem to someone else.

It seemed the area was doomed to a storm that evening when Tanya saw who walked up to their table.

Tanya was about comment on her classes and ask about the flames that Sharleen had produced – was she a fire controller of some kind? Or perhaps a demon, since the flames had come out of her mouth – when Kalyca Starling trotted up, her blonde hair bouncing cheerfully as she beamed at Sharleen and, as usual, grinned at her while completely ignoring Tany. Not that Tany cared that much – Kalyca was obnoxious, pompous, air-headed and just another blonde chick like many stamped across the earth – but even so, being ignored was not how Tany ran things. People at least acknowledged her presence in some way or another – she didn’t care how, but being ignored was not her thing. People paid some attention to her, for some reason or another. Whether they noticed the barometric pressure drop when she entered a room or just noticed her crazy red hair, they at least briefly acknowledged her. So, she was not at all pleased by her apparent dismissal.

“Ignore the welcoming committee, Sharleen, unless you feel like finding a free date. That’s all she’s good for.” Tanya spoke loudly, not even looking at Kalyca as she wiggled her fingers, watching the bolts of lightning jumping between her fingers absently. The bolts became stronger and more frequent as her heart raced from her insolent comment – not that it wasn’t true – but Kalyca had her own powers, and as much as Tany hated to admit it, she was reasonably skilled, despite being a dumb blonde. Tany was walking a thin line, but then, when wasn’t she? She smirked lightly as she watched the lightning intensify on her hand, dancing a dangerous dance. It started to leap out onto the metal table, but it was safe for now. Tanya had it under control until she needed it.

((My muse has been revived! Thanks Kaly! Very Happy Sorry for the previous delay, but I think I've got this now. Smile))

Sharleen first wondered why Tanya was not responding. But then she saw that somebody else was coming to their table, somebody she remembered from seeing. She could also somehow feel that there was something going on between Tanya and this girl. But she did not thought that she should ask what. She thought that she could also try to figure it out later. Even though later was not that much later. The two seemed to hate each other.

When the other girl said that her name was Kalyca Starling, Sharleen suddenly remembered that name. She had always tried to avoid that girl. It seemed that she was a bitch, or something similar, to some extend. She also remembered that Kalyca was at the school for one year. And you want to be the welcoming committee., Sharleen thought and nearly shook her head. This girl had not seen her in the last year, and suddenly she was doing like she was very friendly. For one moment, the dragon asked herself if it could have been because she was not that often around people she did not knew, but then she decided that it could not be like that.

Sharleen smiled at Kalyca, and then bent over the table to Tanya. "Thanks for the warning. But I think I could manage to do something you would like to watch.", the dragon said. She had a plan, and she somehow was sure that it would work. She would try to make Kalyca feeling bad. At least she hoped that she could do it. But at least Kalyca would be annoyed. "Hi Kalyca. I am Sharleen Fireon. Nice to meet you.", she said to the other girl, smiling warmly, her tone in a happy mood. For everybody watching her, that might have seemed strange. But that was part of the plan. "And for the welcoming part, you are four years to late. Oh, wait. Sorry, I have forgotten you came last year.", she said to Kalyca, still with her smile on her face. The dragon somehow felt suddenly better. This had been funny, eventhough she knew that this was not the end. It would go further, even though she did not knew how far.

The girl introduced herself as Sharleen Fireon and said that she was four years too late for the welcome. Then the girl said that she had forgotten that she had only been here for a year. Kalyca arched her eyebrows and said as sweetly as she could, "Uh, darling, you must be mistaken; I also arrived here four years ago. Are you sure you came here then? I don't remember you and I'm really good with people." She tried to keep her eyes from narrowing; she couldn't give this girl the satisfaction of getting angry. She racked her brain for any memory of a Sharleen Fireon from the past four years, but she couldn't come up with anything.

She noticed a flash of light out of the corner of her eye. She looked over and saw lightning dancing around in her hand. A smile spread out on Kalyca's face. She had to admit that Tanya was actually pretty decent about controlling her powers. That is, controlling the amount of lightning she had. She had a fair amount, though Kalyca had more. If she hadn't been in such a public place where it would be obvious to everyone who did it, she would have taught Tanya a few things about controlling an element. But sadly after the stunt she had pulled that day in English, she couldn't risk it.

She turned back to Sharleen wondering what she could be here for. It looked like she was some sort of fire demon or fire controller. Kalyca scoffed, fire, it was so useless when you have water controllers around. She smiled; water was so much more powerful then fire. "So, what are you? Some sort of fire demon or are you a fire controller?"

Sharleen could not believe that Kalyca was at the school for four years, too. She could not remember that girl. It was not that strange that she did not remembered anybody from her first year. At that time she had tried to avoid everybody. But she could not understand why she could not remember Kalyca from the other years. Such a girl should be the first one Sharleen knows, especially so that she would remember to avoid her. But right now, she had to stay calm, which was getting more difficult with every word. Nobody was allowed to call her darling, but if she would attack Kalyca in the middle of the cafe, that would have been really bad. Especially because she would have burned most of the items.

"Yeah, I am sure that I am here for four years. I am also sure that my parents had never wanted that I come here so early. But with your parents it might have been different. Am I right if I say they were happy that you were out of the house.", Sharleen asked, still a very friendly voice. She knew that this was not fair, but it was the first thing that came into her mind which also expressed her feelings.

When Kalyca asked if Sharleen was a fire demon or a fire controller, she laughed her best dragon laugh. It was a deeper, very loud laugh, that also sounded like a roar. "Fire demon or fire controller. Have you never taken care in the lessons? Have you never heared of any other creatures that can breath fire?", was the first part of Sharleens answer. She was sure at some point Kalyca would have to get angry, and right now would be the moment the dragon wanted to see that. "I am a dragon. Do you know anything about dragons? If not, you can go and come back if you have learned something about my species.", Sharleen said and then turned away from Kalyca. She knew that this was not nice, but it should show the other girl how much the dragon thought about her.

Tanya gave Sharleen a curious look when she said that Tanya would enjoy what she had to say. What could she possibly say to Kalyca? Most people were either rude or sucked up to her, from what Tany could see. She wondered what Sharleen had to say that was any different, but she shrugged inwardly. She had given her warning. That was what she was supposed to do, and Sharleen had thanked her for it, so now she was to wait.

At that point, Sharleen turned to Kalyca and smiled as she informed the water controller that while she appreciated her welcome, she was four years too late. Tany snorted with repressed laughter. Kalyca had been at school that long as well (a fact that she was quick to inform Tany’s roommate of), so seeing that she had missed the boat in getting someone else under her little sphere of influence made her irritated and amused Tanya greatly. Her lightning responded to her change in mood and a bolt reached out and grabbed at the metal pole holding up the umbrella, spiraling upwards until Tanya tugged her index finger (the finger the bolt had sprouted from) backwards and brought it back down with a casual smile still on her face.

Her lightning and storms responded to any change in emotion, although anger created the biggest storms. The strength of the emotion she felt influenced the power behind her lightning – for instance, she was amused, so a bolt grew enough to leap out of her hand, but if she had been laughing so hard she couldn’t breath, her lightning might be jumping to other tables in the café. That was another reason why Tany didn’t like to speak to people much – she didn’t have too much control over her lightning yet (although not a bad amount, considering she’d discovered her powers “recently” in controller time), and she didn’t want to hurt anyone. So she kept herself and her emotions downplayed and under control.

Tanya’s smile grew even further when Kalyca said that she must have been mistaken, that Kalyca herself had been at school for four years and didn’t know Sharleen. Oh, it’s so sad that you don’t have yet another little minion, sweetheart. Tanya thought sarcastically, and had to close her hand to prevent some bolts from jumping out, then she swallowed her laughter and smile and opened her hand, letting the lightning gently dance across it again, now that she was under a little more control with her emotions. But that only lasted for a few moments as Sharleen said that she was sorry Kalyca couldn’t have stayed in her own home, although she was sure that her parents had wanted her out. That was a bit of a low blow from Tany’s point of view, since that was exactly what had happened with her parents, since they didn’t want Simon under her short-tempered, lightning storm-creating influence.

She glanced up at Sharleen, who seemed quite irritated under her friendly smile and tone. Kalyca had asked the silent question that Tany had had – what exactly was she? The water controller thought she was a demon or a fire controller, which seemed reasonable to Tany, but Sharleen took offense to that and said that she was, in fact, a dragon. A dragon? Tanya looked up, immediately interested. She had never actually met one, although she’d heard they existed. She also had never thought that they could shape-shift into a human. She made a note to ask Sharleen about it later when they weren’t in such dismal company that they were now. Sharleen, however, did not seem in the mood to discuss it, and turned away from Kalyca. Tanya knew that Kalyca did not face rejection well – but the question was, what was she going to do about it?

Sharleen told Kalyca that she had indeed been at the academy for four years and that her parents never wanted her to leave home that early. Then she told Kalyca that her parents had probably wanted her out of the house. That did it. Kalyca’s eyes narrowed, but before she could do anything else Sharleen told her that she was a dragon and that Kalyca wasn’t smart enough to know about them. Sharleen then turned her back on Kalyca and faced Tanya again. In all of what had just happened Kalyca had forgotten that Tanya was even there until she noticed what the other girl was doing with the lightning. As she watched Tanya manipulate the lightning, it gave her an idea. Kalyca wasn’t going to stand around and while Sharleen ignored her.

“Well, I have to go. I have a lot of homework to finish,” Kalyca said. Kalyca pretended to walk to her dorm, but instead she stop behind a tree. From behind the tree she was unseen from everyone, but she could see the table where Sharleen and Tanya sat. She focused on Sharleen and pulled water up into the air above Sharleen. When she had all the water she could hold, she released it all on Sharleen. Kalyca laughed at the drenched girl until she couldn’t breathe anymore. She gasped for air, then ran back to her dorm before Sharleen could find her. Once she was back in her dorm she smiled to herself and thought, that shows her not to mess with me.

Sharleen did not looked at Kalyca as the girl finally went away. She looked at Tanya. "I know that was not nice and fair, but do you think she is any different?", she asked her. Sharleen had some problems with it that she had made such a low blow. For a second she thought to say sorry. Only so that nobody else thought she was not nice. But then she was suddenly wet. Sharleen knew that this had come from Kalyca. Nobody else would do that. Fast the dragon shook her head. "Ok, this means war. What do you think, Tanya, some nice burning hair would be funny right now."

Sharleen, and dragons in common, were not creatures which attacked fast. It needed much so that they get angry. But Kalyca had managed to reach this point. This water controller had managed to have a dragon as enemy. That was never good, because one time an enemy, always an enemy. Her eyes began to shine yellow as she looked into the direction Kalyca had gone. "Do you want to see that? You could ride on my back. Better view and less danger.", she said to Tanya as she slowly stood up. Sharleen knew right now that only if Tanya hold her back she would not just rush into open space and turn into the dragon she really is. Her eyes already were dragon, and also her skin slowly got black. "Hurry if you want to come with me.", she said again to Tanya while she walked to the door.
